Cat Cleaning His Area.

Question
I have a 3 year old Domestic Shorthair who obsessively cleans around his food and litter box.  After I fill his bowl with food he sweeps the area with his paw.  He does the many times throughout the day too even though nothing is around the bowl.  He also does it around (not in) the litter box.  It looks like it is very obsessive.  He does it so much he moves the food mat around.  Please explain to me if this is a nervous tendency or something else.

Cats love to play as this could be his way of playing OR it could also be that your cat is just keeping his area clean .Cats are very clean animals and they do not love having things scattered around, its nothing big too worry about just remove the mat and put down newspaper or take up the mat and all.
