Question
April (the cat) was purchased at pet smart 2 years ago by my male roommate and was very timid. She didn't even like me. since then my roommate died and I had no choice but to take her.  Needless to say now she is very affectionate but still lowers her ears when you hold her...like she's afraid. That's not the problem...I kind of know that answer.  My question is "Why does she walk around the apartment constantly meowing repeatedly at any given time? It's not a hurtful cry it's annoying cry. I work from home so she's not alone alot...always food, water, clean litter...I find myself contantly telling her to shutup!! IT's driving me crazy...any ideas?

Answer
My first reaction is to make sure she's healthy, no issues which we usually can't see. She could have hearing issues, and may have been deaf or near-deaf when your roommate got her from petsmart. The timidity you mention might have something to do with not being able to hear.

For the walking around and meowing, it could mean the afore-mentioned hearing loss, or (and this is ME giving her human characteristics), she could be missing your roommate and is searching for him.  This is not to say that she hates you; rather, cats get used to seeing certain people and other pets, and when they are not there, the cat goes searching for them, even if the cat didn't really like the other person/pet.

I would first check to be sure she is okay healthwise. Then, and this may sound like a cop-out, though it's really not, is to be patient. Shouting at her won't work (trust me on that), since she may take your shouting at her as a response to her meowing at you.
