UTI or kidney problems?

16:18:10

Question
I have 2 cats and one, the female cat that is around a year and a half old, developed a urinary tract infection about 3-4 months ago.  I had trained both of my cats to go potty in the toilet and she just stopped once this happened.  The other cat is not having any problems, in fact he is still going potty in the toilet.

For treats we would feed the cats soft food (a couple of which are on the pet recall list).  I didn't know if perhaps this urinary tract infection had something to do with the pet food recall or what.  I asked my vet when the news on it first came out, and they had no idea what I was talking about.  They said the cats would be throwing up, and that blood in my cats urine was an indication of UTI (which she had been diagnosed with 3-4 months ago).  I just want to ensure that this is not life threatening.  She went through the antibiotic, we changed her food to something that is supposed to help with UTI, we also bought a water fountain to stimulate her drinking more what, and we are no longer giving either of the cats soft food anymore.  The problem is still persisting and I just don't know what to do.

Answer
Hi Marisa,  Often (as your vet may have told you), once a cat develops UTI they may need more antibotic treatments than one to help them get over this.

I was told by my vet to never give our cats any Fancy Feast wet food at all (and not much wet food), but especially any food at all that has FISH in it.  Check your dry food too in case it contains fish - this irritates UTI prone cats.

If they haven't thrown up, you may have gotten by with the pet recall, but your little girl may still have some UTI infection problems that your Vet should test again for.

Do you also have litter boxes down in case during her lack of going in the toilet, she could use?

Bless you for being a great kitty mom and helping your two babies out!

Please let me know if you have any other questions, or what your Vet says about retesting her.
