semi-feral needs a home!

Question
I've had this fluffy little guy outside on my back patio for about 9 months now. He comes to eat every single night, through rain, sleet, and snow, so I'm almost positive he has nowhere else to go. For the longest while, he'd sit and look into my home through the patio door, or lounge around on the patio before or after eating. He'd only get close if I had food in my hand. Well a couple of weeks ago, he showed up kind of torn up, and I was very concerned and didn't know what to do. Long story short, I began feeding him wet food, and he started camping out on my back patio 24/7. He has a little hut back there that he sleeps in during the day, and he rubs up against my legs now, and lets me pet and pick him up. He's obviously not neutered, and has been attacked in the past. I attempted to take him to the humane shelter, but was just informed that he's a semi-feral cat, and not adoptable by their standards. They're going to neuter him, test him for FelLuk, and give him a rabies shot, but they can't keep him. What am I to do? I have 2 indoor cats already, and only live in a townhome. I could possibly continue to keep him outside, but there are so many other complexes (and stray cats) around that I'm never sure of his safety. Will having him neutered keep him more safe? I also thought about giving him to someone else with more territory, but I don't know how traumatic that would be. I love this little kitty, but don't know what to do!

Answer
Hi Lisa, Well I would certainly recommend getting him neutered if you can. If you do decide to let him live outside in your complex he will be a LOT safer and happier if he is neutered! When he is in for neutering I would advise to get him vaccinated also. This will give him the best chance for a good safe life. THEN.. after he is neutered you will find that he will become more domestic and he will become more adoptable. Sometimes the change doesn't happen right away and with some cats it happens overnight! If you find a home elsewhere for him it won't be as traumatic after he has become more tame...Either way neutering him is a really good first step for this little fellow. Isn't it a shame that someone has abandoned him... He was lucky to find your patio!
