Drying of Milk

Question
Hello! Our kittens are a little over 8 weeks old and are eating very well.  Since we are keeping two of them we are taking Mamma Kitty to my mother-in-laws so she can dry up her milk and then get fixed.  She loves it there so it will be a nice vacation for her!  How long should we keep her there in order for her milk to dry up?  How can we tell when this transition is over?  Any other insight or advise is greatly appreciated on this subject!  Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge.

Answer
Cyndi,

The milk should not take more than a few weeks to dry up.  At first the milk will "bag up", i.e., become hard.  When that has all been absorbed and her body feels normal, the milk has dried up.  For the most part nature does pretty well taking care of the dried milk.  If she becomes sore, you may want to put warm compresses on the area.  If her skin gets too dried and cracked, bag balm will help soften and heal the teats.

Best regards... Norm.
