My Burmese cat smells of urine

Question
Hi Carol, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind answering what is more than likely a pretty simple question i.e. I have a Burmese male (whom was neutered as a kitten) he's now 3 years old and lately he's been coming home smelling of urine around his face. I was wondering if he's been smelling another male, and if so why, another female, (and if so why) or he's being sprayed by one or either sexes, and if so why? Is there anything that I can do to try and stop this behaviour short of locking him in the house? Finally, what is the best solution to getting rid of the smell, I can wash him but he's not a happy chappie if you know what I mean! ;-)
Thanks for your time, cheers.

Answer
Hi Paul!
Do you have bushes around? It sounds like there are male cats in the area who are spraying and your cat is going into whatever is being sprayed on. I don't think a cat is spraying him. Cats spray to mark their territory...and I don't think they think of your cat as their territory! Your cat is probably over-curious and is checking out the smells.

I'm not sure on getting the smell off of a cat itself. That's a new one! I imagine a place like Pet-Smart or Petco may have something commercial to remove the odor from a cat. Or you can try calling a veterinary office to see what they recommend.

I have included a couple of links on removing cat urine. You MAY want to try one on your cat. Just copy and paste the links into your address bar.

Hope these help a little.
