Question
My friend and I want to mate our cats. Tima my cat is a male, about 2 years old and my friends cat Mosa is a female about a year old. Tima is not neutered and Mosa is not spayed.

When we first introduced our cats Mosa came to my house to see Tima and Mosa was in heat about day before we introduced them. When we introduced them Mosa and Tima they hissed at each other and went to hide in different parts of the house. Still hours later they havnt made any contact except for some hissing. Will they be able to mate or if they were going to mate should they have already done it? Also is there anything we could do to help them mate?

Answer
Annie,

First to make your life easier, the two should be confined to a smaller area, like one room.  We often use a spare bathroom.  Also, if neither of them have mated before, it may take them a while to get the idea.  Usually, we put an inexperienced male or female with an experienced cat of the opposite sex.

As for the hissing and spitting, this is normal in a mating situation.  Sometimes it seems that it is a miracle that a male breeds some females, they are so witchy.

If the female comes out of season, you can wait and try again.  If you have not been home to witness a breeding, it is possible that they have done the deed!  Male cats can be pretty quick about the business.  Although this is less likely with an inexperienced male, it is possible.

Once she is out of season, you can check the females nipples about 21 days after you think he may have bred her.  If they are bright pink and slightly enlarged, she may have been bred.  This only lasts for a couple of days and they go back to normal until just before kittens are due.

If this fails, you can always let them live together.  The only downside in this is that you may not know when Mosa actually gets bred.

Please feel free to ask follow up questions.

Best regards... Norm.
