older cat accepting a kitten

Question
Hi there, I would like some tips on how to slowly introduce our new 8 week old kitten, Priya, to our 1 year old cat, Neko. They are both females.
Whenever we try to introduce Priya to Neko, she is generally quite curious and friendly, and has never hissed. She tries to approach Neko, but is greeted by a growl and hiss. We keep them in separate rooms, but if Neko hears Priya's mews, she will go to the closed door, hiss, and she has swiped a paw under the door, hitting Priya in the face!
I believe this problem is due to Neko being an only cat. Their dispositions are also quite different. Priya is a curious little explorer, whereas when Neko was her age, she would just hide under the bed all day.
We have tried switching the rooms they're in, so that they can get used to each other's scent, but Neko will just react by hissing, even if we try to shower her with attention. Is there anything else I can do, or will time solve this issue? My once pleasant kitty, Neko, is now just a grumpy hissy cat!

Answer
Carly,

At this point, I would let them run together.  Ignore the posturing, hissing and spitting.  They will not hurt each other and they will both learn to get along with each other.  Any human interference will be counter productive, so, once they are together ignore the noise and the behavior and do not separate them again.

You may have to maintain an extra litter pan and food dish for a while, but, after a short time, they should begin sharing these.

Giving the established cat extra attention and treats during the adjustment period is always a good idea (cats do get jealous).

If they begin to play chase or do mutual grooming, even if it ends up in a "fight", this is a good sign that they are really getting along.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards... Norm.
