Question
hi there,my mother got a kitten which she then decided she didn't have time or money for although very angry and having three cats already i took her on without injections and unspayed she fell pregnant before i even got to to the vets for her first jabs and was only about 7 months old she had 4 kittens which i helped with the first kept going back in and was feet first so i just held on to it until it was halfway out then the next 3 came fine, the dad (my bengal Charlie) helped clean her and the kittens if he or myself tried to leave the room she went mad i felt she trusted and really needed me,the dad still helps and there almost 6 weeks is that normal?also she is really thin and eating like a hoarse with the runs to,we have been letting eat everything should we just stick to dried foods and some chicken? I'm worried the kittens are getting to much for her but they wont touch warmed milk or kitten food she is letting them drink less and less any advice would be great THANKS

Answer
Hi roxy
to answer your questions.

Some male cats are more maternal than others and can display very caring behaviors for some time.

As for feeding your nursing queen, she will need top quality food to keep her strength up and that is why there are special food products on the market designed for this. See my page about food it has a product for pregnant/nursing queens for instance /cat-diet.html

Kittens should start to be weaned off their mother from 4 weeks on wards, this normally happens as the mother starts to push them away more often, make sure you are providing the kittens with kitten formulated food now so that they can start to eat solid food. See my page about kitten care here /kitten-care.html

I am not sure how quickly a female cat can become pregnant again but i think it is quick quick as i have heard of many cats pushing their kittens away after a couple of months because they have another litter on the way. So to be on the safe side make sure she doesn't come into contact with toms until she has her op.

Best wishes
Kate
