Urine not clumping

Question
I have two cats. And for some reason one of the cats urine is not clumping. I had one cat long than the other this is how I know that my most recent cat's urine is not clumping. Is it because she keeps going in the same spot? How can I get her urine to clump like my other cat? I have already tried two litter boxes and the litter is not old. Any suggestions?

Answer
Well, I'm not sure which type of litter you're using, but I'm guessing it's just standard kitty litter. Anyways, there is not significant chemical reaction with standard clay-based kitty litter, it simply clumps when it gets wet. The best way is to try and observe this cat urinating and see exactly what happens, as there could be a number of reasons her litter is not clumping. It could be possible that repeatedly going in the same spot would break apart the litter, but I think it is more likely that your cat might be attempting to bury their waste, and in the act may be kicking the clump and breaking it apart. From my experience, I have owned a cat that kicked and buried her waste very hard, and sometimes breaking apart the clumps of litter. All clay-based kitty litter clumps when wet, so check to make sure that your cat is indeed using the litter box when she urinates, and that she isn't breaking the clumps.

My final suggestion if this problem persists and you cannot find an answer, is to try silica gel litter, the small whitish crystals. This litter does not require scooping out clumps of litter from urine, but it simply requires you to remove solid waste and stir the crystals around - they absorb urine, do not clump, and last for about 20-30 days, so you will not need to keep replacing the crystals every few days or so. It's more expensive, but it may help if your cat is breaking apart the clumps when it buries them.

Best of luck, I hope this helps!
