my cats rolling heat

Question
My brother's cat, his girl, a 6 year old himalayan, has been in heat for 2 months straight, is there anything to give her that would help her out of this heat? Her appetite has greatly decreased and she has lost weight. Our vet has said that if she doesn't come out of it in a couple weeks, she may die. Is there anything that can be done to help her? He said no, but, I have to ask anyway.

Answer
Cami,

I honestly don't have a good answer for you.  I would definitely get the cat spayed, though.

Since cats are induced ovulators, meaning their bodies attempt to stay in estrus until they mate, it's just possible that she will remain in heat for an undetermined amt of time.  This will make for a very uncomfortable cat, and uncomfortable owners.  There are hormones, both injectable and pill form, that can be given to cats in heat and which end the heat.  I don't have enough knowledge on these hormones, though, to know how effective they are or how safe they are, but I do know it's done. It's also possible that some vets may not administer or rx them, which could be why your vet hasn't offered them to you.  But it is an option that you may want to check into.  I'm sure that any hormones, though, will have the potential to cause nasty side effects, just as they can in humans.  While there's an advantage to taking hormones, and they're needed in some cases, they are not without their dangers--cancer being one of them.  So, you'd have to do your research and listen to what the vet says and weigh the pros vs the cons.  Other than hormones, I don't think there are any other options other than spaying.  While some vets won't spay a cat when in heat, many will, but there are more dangers in spaying when in heat than when not in heat.  But spaying while in heat is not unheard of and is done more frequently than people think.  I would get her spayed though so you can protect her health since she is getting older, and is getting towards the age where she's too old to have kittens safely anyway (I'm assuming that's why she's not been spayed, and I apologize if that's a wrong assumption).  Spaying her will also allow her to enjoy the second half of her life without the discomfort that comes with being in heat--especially prolonged estrus.
