Post care after spaying

Question
our cat was spayed and treated for ear mites and worms. She has a cone on her head which makes it impossible to eat or drink. How long does this cone have to stay on and is it because of the spaying?
Thank You

Answer
Hi Beverly,

Yes, the cone is to ensure that she doesn't lick her incision.  The vet should have given you instructions for how to use it and when to take it off.  I never had it on my cats after their spays--I just kept them confined in a bathroom and monitored them for the first 4 or 5 days.  You should take it off at least twice a day for her feeding times and to make sure she drinks water.  Call your vet and find out how long they recommend it for.  Personally, I think it unnecessary.  Good luck, and have a great week!

Best regards,
Holly Martin
