Question
-----Dear Hilary, thank you for your help. We went to an animal hospital and picked up the parvosol. Cleaned according to your directions, even threw away the specific items that the puppy came in contact with. Even sprayed the Parvosal on our shoes and purchased an Air Filtration system! What I need to know is after having done all this, what is the time frame until we can bring the new puppy home?--------------------

>How do I sanitize a home with carpet after a puppy has died from distemper? We only had her two weeks, but she had already been exposed and had had her shots. I have a new puppy ready to come home to my family, but I want my new puppy to be protected. Thank you.

Hi there!  The very best cleaner for distemper is called Parvosol or Rodocal.  You can call your veterinarian's office and tell them your situation.  I'm sure they would be more than happy to give or sell you some.
Thoroughly spray any hard surfaces in your home and wipe clean.  This will kill the distemper virus.
For carpeted areas use a rug shampooer.  Add some Parvosol or Rodocal to the shampoo and shampoo all rugs.  Be sure to wash anything and everything the pup came in contact with.
The distemper virus can live up to 4 weeks.  Even if it has been longer, it's better to be safe than sorry, so I'd use the cleaners listed above anyway.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your previous puppy.  I hope that this new puppy fills your heart with joy and gives you many, many happy years.
Take care,
Hilary

Answer
Hi there!  It sounds as though you cleaned very thoroughly with the Parvosol!  That's excellent!  I would wait about a week until bringing the new puppy into your home, just to be safe.  The Parvosol has killed the virus, but I always feel the need to go the extra step.  It truly is up to you.  You could probably take the puppy home tomorrow and everything would be fine!  I always just go the safer route.
Best of luck with your new pup!
