Strange Pomeranian behavior

Question
My pomeranian has just started eating her own fecies.  She is a 5month old female and she is not really potty trained yet.  She messed on the bathroom floor while I was in the shower, I looked out to check on her and I saw her in the process of eating her fresh poop!  I just wanted to know if there was a reason for this, is she sick, or is it somewhat normal?? Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi Ashley!  This behavior...although unpleasant, is normal.
Before dogs were domesticated, they had traveled in the wild, in packs.  They would eat their feces to hide their tracks from predators.  Today, when we see dogs eat their own feces, it is simply their instinct to do so.  To deter this behavior, tell her "No" and pick the feces up asap.  During those times when you are unable to get to the feces before she does, pick up what remains and tell her "no." She should catch on rather quickly that this behavior is not desirable!
Best of luck!
