Question
Hi.I have a 6 year old Germand Shephard mix Lab.He has seizures. The vet has had him on Phenobarbitol. He gets two pills in the morning and two pills at night.Anyway, here is the real actual question. He is REALLY fat!He is active and does eat regulary, but not all the time.He nibbles here and there.Could it be his age or medication? We take him for regular walks. What can we do?WE CAN NOT TAKE HIM TO THE VET!Any information will be helpful!Thank you

Answer
Hi there!  His weight gain could be from the phenobarbitol, but it may also be due to Hypothyroidism.  Middle age is where this disease will show up, and it is easily controlled with medication.  Is the reason you can't take him to the vet because he gets too stressed out?  There are some vets that will make house calls.
Perhaps putting him on a diet formula food would help him lose a bit of weight?  I would definately suggest blood work to rule out the Hypothyroidism though, because if this is present, it will need to be treated.
I wish I could be of more help,
Hilary
