Hi Becca.  The only way whip worms can be diagnosed would be through fecal testing by your veterinarian and they are cured with a whip worm dewormer.
Generally, symptoms of any intestinal parasite could be weight loss, diarrhea, or even no symptoms at all.
Is your dog showing symptoms of an intestinal parasite?
If so, I would definately suggest a vet visit so that you can obtain the special dewormer used to cure this problem
