Question - Thank you for the quick response.  I just want to clarify that he does use the litter box but when he doesn't it's in the same room and right near the box.  Do you still think it could be a Colon problem.

Thanks, Amanda
I have an 8yr old domestic long hair.  He is having a problem pooping in his litter box, not all the time though.  I even have two litter boxes for him side by side.  I have tried everything ie: changing litter completely, cleaning out daily, even moving items away from box thinking that was the problem.  Sometimes he goes in the box, sometimes he doesn't.  He is honestly driving me insane.  PLEASE HELP!

Hi Amanda!  I would definately link this behavior with Feline Mega Colon.  Middle to senior aged cats tend to develop this problem.  The muscles in the colon simply do not work and because of this there is a bit of nerve damage, which they cannot feel when they have to go to the litterbox.  This causes constipation and involuntary bowel movements...which leads to not always using the litter box!
Cisapride and Cefulac Syrup are used to treat this problem, and these medications do a world of good! Your veterinarian can prescribe them for you.
I hope this helps and let me know how he does!

Answer
Hi Amanda!  It's really hard to say, whether or not he's just being excessively picky, or if it definately is a colon problem.  My Aunt's cat will not use the litterbox if it has one drop of urine in it!  Alot of cats can get really picky about that.  How is the fecal matter?  Is it extremely hard or soft?  If so, it probably is a colon problem. If it appears normal, he may just be a picky kitty!
Let me know how it goes!
