Question
My three month old cocker spaniel had been coughing for three weeks. All the while i hav been sending her for consultation but to no avail. The blood test result said that my dog has low positive distemper disease. The vet is giving me 1/2Doxy(antibiotic) and 1/4Prod (steroid which is stronger than penicilin)
She do not have the sign of distemper besides coughing. She already had the 1st vaccin for distemper and  Parvovirus.
Right now my dog is still eating but refuse to play because she will start coughing once she is too active. She is having greenish discharge on her nose .  I wonder how i can help her to get away all the discharge. I know there is no direct cure for this disease. The only thing is how to stop my dog from coughing and get away all the discharge.
How to boost up her immune system to fight against the virus. How to make sure that she wont develop neurologic signs. I did send my dog for boarding and treatment but the  vet said not necessery cause my dog still eating and running around. (Just to make sure she is not too excited or else she will start coughing again) Im helpless and hopeless now, What can i really do for my dog.

Answer
Hi Patrice!  The medication your baby is on, is absolutely perfect.  Doxycycline is an extremely heavy duty antibiotic, that is actually used to treat Lyme's Disease in humans and animals alike.  This is the strongest it can get, so this antibiotic really should take care of the problem eventually.  Is the steroid Prednisone or Prednisolone (depending on vendor)?  If so, this too, works acceptionally well.
You may want to talk to your veterinarian about Vitamin B injections.  This will help to strengthen your puppy's immune system.
Dehydration is also common in puppy's with distemper, so keep a close eye on her that she is drinking enough.
Just to warn you, distemper may cause tremors/siezures.  There is no way to prevent them from developing.  If your puppy develops these symptoms, taking her to your veterinarian immediately for anti-convulsants is important.  Watching your dog have  siezure is very scarey.  Be sure not to panic.  Clear out the area around your puppy if she begins to siezure so she doesn't injure herself on anything.  It is normal for an animal to lose control of their bladder and bowels when siezuring as well.  Siezures usually only last between seconds to a minute/minute and a half.  I just wanted to prepare you in case she does have a siezure, so you know what to expect.
Anti-nausea drugs would be beneficial if she begins vomiting/diarrhea, and again, don't panic if you see blood in the vomit of fecal matter.  Distemper effects the GI track and it is common for blood to be present with an irritation in the digestive system.
Be sure to also keep her in a warm, draft free area, to prevent pneumonia.  There is nothing you can do to get the discharge from her nose to go away. The antibiotic will take care of that.  Just be sure that when you see the discharge, to wipe it away with a warm wet cloth to prevent it from crusting.
It is such a very good sign that she is eating!  I rescued a kitten a few years ago who had feline distemper.  He was so ill, I had to force feed him for 3 weeks straight, every two hours.  His fever went above 107 (which should have caused brain damage.)  That same kitten is now 4 years old and ohhh...about 19 lbs!  I never expected him to be a huge cat, and I didn't even expect him to make it through his illness.  I hope that this will help assure you that animals are much stronger fighters than we know and that your baby can make it through this! Just be sure, if you see any new symptoms or changes in her behavior, to contact your veterinarian promptly.

Since the blood results came back as a low positive for distemper, I think that your puppy is in good hands.  It was caught early, she is on all the most powerful and beneficial medications, she is eating and has energy.  As of right now, I would definately say that you should definately be feeling positive.
Please keep me posted on her!  I will definately be thinking of you and her!
Sending that spaniel baby tons of get well kisses,
Hilary
