Scabs on my cat

Question
For about the past six months my cat has had scabs on his skin.  I want to know what could be causing these.  I dont know if its from him scratching himself or what.  I've been to three different vets and no of them seemed to care to determine what the problem was.  They told me not to worry about it, but they are just so gross and he has several at a time, I just want them gone.  He was diagnossed with asthma and was taking pills for that.  One vet said the pills could be causing the scabs, but he's been off the pills for several months know and the scabs still occur.  When you pet him, chunks of fur come off at a time with part of the scab attached to the end.  I have another cat and she seems to have to problems.  Can you please help me determine what these scabs are all about?  you are pretty much my last hope!

Thank you for your time,

Lisa

Answer
I cannot diagnose on the internet.  I may be that your cat has an allergy to something.  That may be causing the scabs.  Ask your vet if that is possible and try getting him a shot of something called DepoMedrol.  If that helps, it will last for about 3-4 weeks and then the scabs will return.  We give this shot every 4-6 weeks in many allergic cats.  There is also a spray called Genesis that also acts to relieve the itching on the skin.
