Question
i just went from a 10 gal to a 20 i doubled my live rock and added a Valencia puffer, 3 scarlet hermits , 4 snails and some dead coral in with my domino damsel. im feeding the puffer frozen shrimp cubes once a day. but the damsel doesnt seem to be able to eat the shrimp so i through in the flake food... over night a mustard color film has covered every thing in the tank but not really getting too heavy on the glass or clouding the water ... but it is yellowing my Fiji rock.... ive had the tank with fish set up for a week and a half and havent changed out water yet... didnt want to stress the fish too soon ... how do i safely clear up the yellow what im assuming is algae?

Answer
Hi there, I think it was a bit soon to thrown everything in. Even if you used the same water and filter media etc because new live rock was added it should have been left to complete a cycle. Check the parameters, algae is usually caused by excess nutrients and I think that because everything was put together with in a week and a half there has probably been some die off from the rocks etc causing some ammonia, nitrates and/or nitrites. I never recommend cycling with fish and would personally remove the fish until the cycle has completed but if you are not willing to do that you may just have to wait it out. Try using some carbon in the filter to clear the water a bit and keep the lights on alot less during the day and hope that the algae clears. If the tank is going through a cycle it is possible you may loose some fish (not always but something to be aware of) Hope this helps.
