Question
your help would be SO appreciated!
I have had my comet goldfish Jett in a 5 gallon tank healthy as can be for 9 years.  He has had many little buddys one at a time that have all passsed away.  Recently after one passed, I bought him a new buddy, a black moor.  He has been in the tank with the 9 year old comet for over a week and the black moor is still fine and healthy, but my poor comet 2 days ago started looking lethargic.  I thought maybe he wasnt accustiomed to the new fish but now he is just sitting at the bottom of the tank, very depressed, didnt eat at all today or last night, fins tight to his body, tail tight together, eyes look wide open( if thats possible) and his base of his tail fin looks like its blood shot or has blood vessles in it, as well as little blood vessles all over his body.  He over all looks so depressed and looks like hes dying.  He will occasionally swim to the top if the black moor swims near him or something then after a few seconds swims ( sinks) back down.  Hes not belly up at all, he stays strait and tight to the bottom.  He looks just awful I feel terrible I can tell hes suffering, what should I do for him?  Thank you please email JLaw555@aol.com!!!!

Answer
Dear Jeff,
Thank you for sharing your fish tank problems with me. I would say that nine years is a good long life for a gold fish and it may just be his time. However, there are a few things you can do to make him more comfortable, if not help him through this phase into a few more months (or years) of healthy life.
First, cut back on your feeding. Too much food can pollute the water. Also, buy a bottle of "Cycle" and use it to help condition the water. Keep the bottle in the fridge and use it whenever you change the tank. My steps for healthy tank care are posted here:

I will cc this message to your email address.
I hope this helps. If he dies, give him a decent funeral. It can help.
Sincerely,
Nori
