Question
Hi, and thanks for helping. I have a 100 gal tank (about 5 weeks old now) It has already completely cycled. I have 4 clown loaches, 2 silver tip sharks, 4 corys, 4 silver dollars, 7 barbs, and 2 kissing gouramis. I am pretty sure ick is developing. There are a couple spots on a few fish and sharks are "flipping" on the bottom. I guess this is scratching? Also, there are little "spots" all over the inside of the glass. They do not go away when I scrub with magnet cleaner.I have used conditioning salt from the beginning and my temp has been 80-82 degrees since setup. Lots of info I have found suggests using salt and temp to treat ick, but if that's what I have it developed under these conditions. I am afraid to treat with meds because of all my scaleless fish. Also I am not sure I understand all about the carbon filter when treating. If I treat with meds and remove my carbon filters, can I reuse the same ones after treatment? Also, will my tank have to cycle again? I hate the thought of having it cycle with all these fish in it! I have become very attached to my fish already! Please let me know what you think so I can do something quickly. I sure don't want to hurt any of my fish. Thanks again-
Danielle

Answer
Hi,
well, first off check your water conditions, PH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.
If they are all fine then we can do a couple of things, the easy way although a bit longer is to raise the temp to 88-90 and keep it there.
That will kill off the parasites. It takes about a week.
If things are worse or the fish are super stressed then any treatment is better than nothing.
I like Jungle Ick guard and there are alot of products out there as well.
You remove the carbon so that it will not filter out the medicine.
I would not recommend reusing your filter cartridges.
If you don;t use any other meds other than the Ick cure your tanks biofilter will be fine, antibiotics can disrupt things.
You can also do a combo treatment, half strength Ick medication and elevated temp. That works well and will not kill off your scaleless fish.
Also, feed a little more if they will eat it as the elevated temps speed up the fishes metabolism.
If you need more help, just ask.
