African Cichlids (Brichardi)

Question
I began fish keeping a short few months ago. After successfully setting up three 10 gallons, along with twelve 1 gallon Betta tanks, I am wanting to setup a species only Brichardi tank. I have done research on this Cichlid and discovered Brichardi would be the best choice for a beginner Cichlid hobbyist.

I know about the high pH requirements and have purchased an African Cichlid substrate to accommodate this requirement along with Aquarium salt. However, my question is more to do with decorating the tank. I'm starting off with a 20 gallon tank and 4 - 5 Brichardi Cichlids then eventually move up to a larger tank with a variety of African Cichlids. They need lots of rocks and caves etc I am told. I was also told that the weight of these rocks may crack and/or break the aquarium glass. Someone told me to cut up egg crates and place them under the substrate to protect the glass. Do you recommend this or would an undergravel filter do just as well in protecting the glass?

Answer
With all of the Chiclids I have ever had Brichardi still remain on of my favorites. An under gravel filter should salve your problem with the rocks however if your using lace rock cracked glass really isn't something for you to worry about, its a light pours rock that Cichlids love to use for breeding.  Good luck.
