Ballon Molly with white spot on fin! And Fish in treatment Not Doing well!

Question
Today i noticed a white spot on my balloon mollie's back fin, and I Know it isn't natural. Then I just noticed it was gone, like it just disappeared. I can't really tell if it is ich or not because my molly is white and black polka dots. I hope it isn't ich because I had another molly who had babies a week ago and they are in a plastic thing (to keep the babies from being eaten)that is in the same tank with the molly. If he does have ich it might be because his best buddy the other molly(molly who had the babies)got gill rot disease a couple days ago and is put in a separate tank for treatment. The one(who had babies) in the separate tank now isn't doing good either. She wont eat, fins are ripped, and isn't acting normal. Every 24 hours I put maracyn in so it will make the gill rot disease go away, but i hope she doesn't get ich either. I don't know what I'm supposed to do because if i put her back in the tank to try to keep the other molly unstressed, the gill rot will get worse! Plus the molly or the other one who had babies might have ich and kill all my other fish and the babies!! I don't want my fish to die! This a definite emergency and i need help fast!!! Please!!

Answer
Dear Tamara,

Sorry to hear your mollies aren't doing so well.  First, lets get the babies to a safe place.  If you have another container, or another tank, doesn't have to be big, I would move them to it.  A cheap gold fish bowl is fine, just use tap water that is treated with ClorAm-x (purchase at your local fish store)to rid the chlorine and chloramine, as well as neutralize ammonia.  Put an airstone in the bowl with the babies, and they should be safe until we get the rest of your system taken care of.

Ick is a parasite that will have to be treated with maracide.  Also, you will need to bump your temp up to about 78 to 80 degrees.  Follow the directions on the bottle for treating ick, but, do it for 5 more days than what it says.  As ick has a dormant stage, and it may appear gone, but is actually lying dormant.

Your mollie with the gill disease and torn fins should be treated with melafix.  Follow the directions on the bottle, and add 1 teaspoon of salt per 5 gallons of water.  Mollies need salt anyway, and it helps reduce the stress on them.  Within a few days, you should see marked improvement.

I hope this has helped you.  If you need any further assistance, please feel free to ask questions.

Sincerely,

Adrian
