Question
I am currently getting ready to set up a 110 gallon tank in addition to my 20 gal. In it I plan on having loaches(kuhlii, clown, lochata) plecos, a ghost knife, sharks, livebearers, tetras, cories, guouramis, angelfish and barbs. What do you think the best substrate to use would be in terms of attractiveness, effectiveness, healthiness(etc), and COST

Answer
Hi Jarrod

Well I hope you research the compatibility of these fish before placing them in a tank together. There are a couple you mentioned that concern me if you're planning to put them together.

As far as gravel goes, I use a dark brown natural colored gravel to bring out the colors in my more colorful fish. I use a light natural sand or natural gravel for my dark colored fish. I use agricultural soil in my planted tanks. As far as price, you have to shop around. Don't buy gravel that is stored underneath or near the stores aquariums, or that has moisture inside or outside of the bag. It will likely contain mold and/or mildew. And always use natural gravels, avoid the colored gravel.

Hope this helps, good luck!
