Platy behavior

Question
Dear Karen,
Recently my female platy has been holding her fins close to her body and been doing that sort of "wag" thing where they stay in place but wiggle side to side, is there anything that you know of that could be the cause of this. its really strange and is something easily treated i would really like to know. she is pretty and id like for her to be a momma.

Answer
Hi Courtney,
This behavior usually signals stress. I would try doing daily 30% water changes on the aquarium for a while (always make sure to treat new water with water conditioner and insure the temp is equal to or just a bit warmer than your tank's) and see if she improves --- that should make her feel a little better. Female platies can be very sensitive to water pollution issues like any trace of ammonia or nitrites or high nitrates in the aquarium water (you can easily test for all three with simple test kits from your petstore)

Keep a close eye on her and notice if any other obvious symptoms show.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
Karen~
