Question
QUESTION: I am setting up a new tank for a tropical community tank. Have added Prime to tap water and tank has been left(cold) for 1 week. Took water readings today PH 7.3, Nitrate 2, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, KH 5 (5drops), GH 107 (6drops).Today I transferred filter from existing community tank plus sprinkled in a pinch of fish food. Turned heater on. No plants or fish in tank yet. Two questions a)I haven't got a clue what my KH/Gh readings mean. b) how do I know when the water is OK to add fish?  Many Thanks  Jim

ANSWER: your kh is perfect, anywhere from 100 to 300 ppm is awsome. you will know when your ready to add fish when everything is stable for a week

QUESTION: Thank you Aaron I an still confused. You say anywhere from 100 to 300 ppm is awsome however, according to the information I received with test kit
1 drop = 1 degree dKH which multiplied by 17.85 gives ppm. Therefore my 5 drops is less than 90 ppm. My PH in the other aquarium is always on the high side, I really would like to be a bit nearer to a neutral 7 (or even a tiny bit softer 6.9 or so).
Sorry to be a pain, hope you can help.
Many Thanks and Regards

Jim

Answer
ive never heard of multiplying it. in all my test kits, one drop = 100 ppm. so if that is correct your water is 500 ppm, which is way to high. this will fluctuate untill your water is estblished, along with your p.h. hope this helps
