Question
QUESTION: about two weeks ago i brought some new gravel and plants. After about a day the water started going cloudy and a nasty smell started coming from the tank, then my guppies started dying one by one and also my worms- one of my sucker fish and my black ghost knife fish all have died. i have done water checks with my pH reading between 7.5-8.0 i have changed little amounts of water to see if this works to find it still going cloudy , so i decided to put the rest of my fish in another tank while i clean the whole tank out which i did to find that the tank is still smelly and cloudy i don't know what to do as i don't want anymore of my fish to die.

ANSWER: Bianca,
Let me first make sure I understand the question. Two weeks ago you either added new gravel or you changed the gravel. When you did that, did you first rinse the gravel real well in hot water, and did you changed out the water and start over? There could be a couple of things going on, but if I could get clarification with a few things, it will help me help you better.
1. was the tank, restarted? Meaning clean filter, cleaned tank?
2. what worms are in your tank that you don't want to lose.
3. what are your levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates?
4. when you cleaned the tank, did you clean the filter too?

I will wait to hear back from you. Give me as much information as you can.

Answer
Bianca,
I have somewhat the same problem when I set up a new tank. Unfortunately, rinsing gravel can take awhile and no matter how well you rinse it, you will end up with cloudy water. This usually goes away after a few days. Since you cleaned everything, your tank is going to go through the cycle process all over again. If you have any air stones or tubing in the tank, did you replace it? You mentioned in the original question that you added plants. Are they real or silk? Sometimes, plants can make the water cloudy, and it could make the tank smell. If the plants are real, that could be the problem. Did you rinse them well before you added them to the tank? What kind of plants are they? It sounds like you were having no problems until you added gravel and plants. When things are good and then suddenly change, its a good idea to start looking at what we did right before then. It would be a good idea to get a liquid water tester. All tank owners should have them.
