Cleaning a fish tank

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 50 gal freshwater tank that was in storage for quite some time due to me being overseas. The tank itself is in great condition except that the inside is now all molded and mildewed. I was told that I could clean the tank with a baking soda/water/vinegar paste. But my question is; will this good thorough baking soda mixture prevent the tank from molding/mildewing in the future? Will the mold/mildew damage my ecosystem once I am ready to set the tank back up? Should I go ahead and get a new tank, or should I attempt to salvage this one?

Thanks for your help.
Sam

Answer
Hi Sam;

Use a mild bleach and water solution to clean the mildew. I use a couple of Tablespoons of bleach to a gallon of water and use a rag to wipe it on. Let it stand for awhile and rinse, rinse, rinse. Or, fill up the tank in a level location and add a cup of bleach. Let it sit for half an hour or so and then drain and rinse. Rinsing is most important.

Use caution with your clothes and anything else you don't want bleached. Bleach stains are permanent.

Followups welcome
