Betta in poor health

Question
I have had a betta for the past two years, but for the past month his health hs been worsening.  He has lost his color, his energy, he was "hanging out" on the plant at the top of his bowl (as if it was supporting him)and for the past week he has been at the bottom of the bowl, on his side.  I think he is dying, but I feel terrible, as he has been in this condition for so long.  Is there anything I can do to save him?

Answer
Hello Ellen-

Unfortunately, two years is about tops for bettas nowadays. He may have been a year old when you purchased him, which makes him especially old for a betta.

The best you can do for him is keep is water clean and warm. 80 F is ideal, and may perk him up. You can also add some Melafix, as this also may encourage him to move around a bit.

If you feel the need to put him to sleep, you can purchase some FinQuel (or alternatively, use clove oil.) Or, you can choose to place his bowl in the freezer, this is by far the most humane method of at-home euthanasia.

Hope you and your little guy feel better soon.
