bettas with other fish

Question
I have a male betta which I put into a floating separation in a 10 gallon tank, so far I have a few guppis in the tank. I was wondering if the betta was able to swim freely in the tank with the other fish. I have read that they are able to be in tanks with other none fin nipping fish, I was just wondering what fish classified as these. As well if you have any great tips for someone who is just starting their first aquarium, it would be helpfull. Thanks for the help.

Hi Liz;

Your betta will think the male guppies are other bettas and try to fight with them so they really aren't a good match. Here is a link to some betta tankmate suggestions;
