Question
I've just brought a 6 galloon tank and am not sure what types of fish to purchase I have set it up and the filter has been running a week as advised I'm keeping the tank at 24.c I want the tank to look varied with a mixture of types of fish. I know now that its a rather small tank and dont want to be cruel by over filling it so do you have any ideas for a good comunity of fish. Also which fish would be more hardy to cycle the tank when i start.
Thanks for your time, Tracey

Answer
Hello Tracey,
You may want to start off with some micro rasboras. Rasboras are a hearty species and some types are very small, so you have can a little more fish in there than with the larger types. Galaxy MicroRasboras are extremely beautiful, but also hard to come by.
Stick to fish that get no larger than 1.5-2 inches, and make sure to put in compatible fish.
A few guppies and some kuhli loaches OR cory cats would be a great addition. You will want to add no more than 1-3 fish per week, so you don't overload your developing biofilter.
Just do some searches on small freshwater fish and you should be able to find quite a few beautiful ones.
I would recommend buying a test kit (one that has ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels) to keep an eye on your water quality, so you can know when it's safe to add more fish - and when it's time to do a water change.
Peacock Gudgeons are a gorgeous, tiny species you might be interested in. Just be sure to research each fish before you get it to make sure you can provide the suitable home, and you'll do just fine.
Welcome to the joys of fishkeeping :)
