Adding Salt to Freshwater Aquarium

Question
Hi Ron, I have 3 black mollies and 2 dalmation. This is the second time they've had ick and now one has pop eye. I've been reading a lot that they do better if you add salt to the tank. However, I also have an upsidedown catfish, african dwarf frog, and a scissor tail rasbora in the same tank(they never seem to get sick, only the mollies). I was just wondering if the salt would hurt them. They are in a 12 gal. eclipse tank w/ a carbon filter and bio wheel. I can move the frog to my smaller tank but it is to small for the rasbora or catfish.Any info would be great. Thanks for your time. Casey

Answer
Hi Casey,
Personally I never add salt to a freshwater fish tank.  If the fish has ick, I strongly suggest you use Rid-Ich or Quik-Cure or one of the other ick treatments.  However, be careful, you may have to temporarily house the catfish elsewhere because catfish are VERY sensitive to these sorts of chemicals (mostly copper).
