how do you know when a snail is deadh

Dead snails smell bad. REALLY bad. Lift it out of the tank take a sniff of the shell opening. It should just smell pretty much like your tank water. If there is a trapdoor on the shell, try to gently pull it open with a fingernail. If it won't budge, he's still alive. Sometimes snails will just kind of "go on vacation". They hide and float around or sit on the bottm for several days. Some snails tend to be nocturnal so they hide during the day. Some just come out at night because the fish harass them during the day. Or, sometimes it's because the tank or the water conditions aren't to their liking. Hopefully yours is okay...
