Salvinia with a growth

Question
I have a Salvini with a large, red growth on the underside of it's mouth that looks like a wart or pimple.  The growth first appeared about a week ago and has grown quickly.  It's now probably 4 or 5 millimeters long and looks very irritated.  In the last 24 hours it's changed so it looks like something might be tunneling out of the growth.  The fish is not exhibiting any strange behavior, and is eating and acting normally.  It's in a 75G tank with Salvinis, Convicts, a couple spotted Pictus cats and a Plecostomus.  Water is clean and changed frequently.  I feed them Tetra Tropical Flakes, and occasionally Tetra Cichlid Sticks.  Can you tell me what my Salvini's problem is and how I should treat it?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Hi Dan,
Unfortunately that is pretty hard to judge from here.  It is possible that he has some sort of parasite that is indeed burrowing out.  If so, there is little that you can do about that.  Alternatively, he may have banged his lip on something and it is now infected. Or, it may be the result of a fight with another fish. There are various anti-fungal and anti-bacterial treatments that you could try, although generally I find that cichlids can often deal with these sorts of things on their own.  The choice is yours.
