Question
HI,

I have spent hours going over all kinds of websites and i think i know what im going to get, but i wanted to ask you a couple questions and see if my tank set up would be problematic

in my 30 gallon tropical tank i have:
2 male German blue rams
6 glofish
1 small bristle nosed pleco
(my otto disappeared)

i want to add:
1 pearl gourami
2 dwarf gourami
1 or 2 anglefish
a couple extra glofish

dose this sound ok? my tank is well planted, and has decorations to allow territory to be established.

would it be better to just get two angles? i heard they are better alone or in groups.

and would a cockatoo or agazzi cichlid be alright, or would that be pushing it?

my rams are still dull in colour, but are active and eating.when i got them i was hoping their colours would improve when they got to my tank, because my water conditions are better than the overcrowded store. is this true, or are they just dull for life? if they will improve, how long dose that generally take?

i do weekly water changes and feed frozen brine shrimp, quality flake food, and sinking shrimp pellets.

Thanks for all your help again,
mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
Angel Fish need 10 gallons of water each to be comfortable, and they prefer a high tank.  If you do get Angels, make sure you buy them the same size.  Angels are a little tricky, sometimes they get along, and sometimes they don't.  If they pair off, then you would need another tank to house them.  They are quite vicious when they pair.  It may never happen, but you would have to watch them carefully, because if they did try to pair off, they do the "nuptial dance."  They grab each other by the mouth, and pull, and sway around the tank.  This can go on for 15-25 minutes.  If they are not of equal force, the stronger one will try to kill the weaker one.  It is impossible to tell the difference between male, and female.  They are quite difficult to pair, but if they do, be prepared.  Just thought I would mention this, in case you didn't know.  You could add two angels, 2 dwarf gourami, and 2 pearl gouramis.  I would forget about the two glofish.  Your rams may be females, the females have less colour than the males.  The cockatoo may work, and he may not.  If you do add one, make sure you add another hiding place for him, or fights may break out with the rams.  As you know, cichlids are very territorial, and each have their own character,  Some are more aggressive than others.  Remember to add a floating plant for the gourami, and try not to buy them in pairs.  Buy two males, or two females.  You could also add bloodworms, and daphnia to their diet.  Daphnia is very good for fish, and helps them with their digestive system.  Bloodworms are a real treat to them, and they should have some now, and then.  The more you vary their food, the healthier they will be, as they get their vitamins in different foods.
I hope this helps
