Question
I know now that one of my glowfish is pregnant but what I need to know is how long they stay pregnant and if the eggs or babies will be safe in a tank that has two more glowfish and 5 neon (blue\red) tetras. the tank is a 5 gallon tank

Answer
Morgan,
For starters, the 5 gallon tank is too small. I suggest you purchase 10 gallon "breeding" tank for the pregnant glo-fish, her mate and the fry. In order for your fry to survive it would be a good idea to place 2 inches of glass marbles on the bottom of the breeding tank, as it will provide a safe place for the eggs until they are ready to hatch (approximately 7 days after the eggs are released) A heater set at 74 degrees and a sponge filter would also be advisable.      Put the female in the breeding tank first, and allow her to settle for a day or so, then introduce the male to the tank. I have read it sometimes helps to add a few cups of cold water to the tank as it may cause the courtship to begin. If everything goes well the female will release her eggs and the male will fertilize them. The eggs will then sink to the bottom, falling through the marbles, where they will be safe. Baby brine shrimp, liquid fry food and Infusoria tablets are all good choices for feeding the newly hatched fry.
Your 5 gallon tank is a bit over crowded Morgan! I suggest you buy a ten gallon as it would be more suitable for all 8 fish. I hope this helps. Let me know how everything goes.
