Angelfish breeding

Question
QUESTION: Hello. I have a couple questions.

This is the third time my angelfish have spawned. I know for sure that it's a male and a female, because the last time, the eggs began to develop little tails and they started hatching.

A year 1/2 ago I bought my two angels. One silver angel (male) and one gold angel (female). They were babies when I got them, and who would have thought that the two I picked out were male and female. So they paired up and began doing their fishy business, and now they want kids. So here is the problem... the last two times they tried spawning, about 1/2 the eggs turned white (unfertilized) and grew fungus. I guess when I was away, something must have happened because when I came back all the eggs were gone. This is the third attempt they have made at spawning, and eggs are turning white again. This time, hardly any turned white, which means there are a lot of fertilized eggs. I was wondering though, aren't the parents supposed to know the white eggs are not fertile, and aren't they supposed to eat them? Mine don't. They fan their eggs, but they don't eat the white ones.

My two questions are:

1. Do I remove the white unfertilized eggs?

2. The unfertile eggs will eventually develop fungus, so if it does, would that kill all of the fertile eggs and wipe out the whole spawn?

ANSWER: Gregory,
Yes, the parents usually remove the unfertilized eggs. Since they are not doing it you can either add anti fungal drops to the tank, or remove them yourself. If the unfertilized eggs are left in the tank, they can cause problems to the other eggs and fish. I have enclosed a great website about breeding the Angels.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hello again. I have one quick follow-up question.

How long after angels breed will they normally breed again if their spawn was unsuccessful? I have read 2 weeks, 1 month, and some people say 10 days. My angels are 1 and 1/2 years old, and when they do again, this will be their fourth attempt. How long would you say they would wait until spawning again? Is there a way to make them spawn faster? I extracted a vile of water the last time they spawned to hopefully get pheromones if any. Should I try using that vile or are there other methods professional breeders use to help their angels breed?

Thanks again.

Answer
Gregory,
They should spawn again in 2 to 3 weeks. They will also spawn in two weeks when they have fry. The eggs they lay will become food for the babies. The vile of water will not do anything to help them spawn. Just make sure the breeding tank is a 20 gallon tall, with a heater and sponge filter. Make sure the breeding tank has been cycled before you add the pair. When spawning is finish, you can either leave the pair in the tank to raise the fry or remove them and then you take over. To stimulate the pair to breed, start changing 10% of the water in the tank once a day. Keep the temperature at 74 degrees for two days. After two days increase the temperature to 76 degrees. The third day 78 degrees and the fourth day to 80. After the fourth day, lower the temperature 2 degrees per day down to 74 degrees, repeat the temperature changes from 74-80 degrees up and down. Keep changing 10% of the water until they lay eggs. If it is a pair, they are mature enough and are a male and female, they will breed! Once they have laid their eggs, keep the temperature stable at the point where the eggs were laid and keep it there.
