sick dwarf gourami

Question
I bought some dwarf gourami. They were fighting so I separated them, one of them is currently in a 5 gallon aquarium with a few neon tetrus. It started staying in the mid-range area of the tank, it stays curled up and has stopped eating. It is a male, it just started acting this way. We separated him before he was beaten up and we have tested the water and all the parameters are within range for the water. We even put about a tsp. of saltwater salt to see if it would help. We do water changes at least once a week. Please help me with my dilemma, I cannot find any information on my problem. The other gourami is doing fine in the other tank, I bought them at the same time.
         Thank you

Answer
Cindy,     I am sorry that your problem with your gourami hasn't been addressed. I think you probably have lost him. I hope not, but I have to tell you I have been doing this for years and I really did some research on this. I would think most would say this was tuberculosis. If it was it was the most extreme I have ever heard of and he would have been that way when you got him most likely. Maybe it was the beginning of a bad swimbladder infection. I also wanted you to know the gourami's can handle the sea salt. The rest will stress. Its a great way to get rid of parasites in a freshwater fish quickly but, needs to be done in a separate bath with a medicinal dose. Which would be full strength sea saltwater like instant ocean I think is 1 cup per gallon read directions. Put the fish in never more then 3 to 5 minutes. It actually makes the parasite explode. For future reference. If its in the tank then the tank needs to be medicated with coppersafe the only thing I use. Do not have to take filter cartridge out. It is mineral based and only comes out with water changes. I hope your tanks are OK now. In the future if you do not get an answer ask again. He probably should have been medicated immediately with tetracycline. If someone else picked this question up I hope they helped. Good Luck, Tina
