paralyzed budgie

Question
hi, i was googling this topic when i came across this site n noticed that someone else also had the same problem with thier budgie. recently i found my bugdie lyin in the bottom of the cage, he is also only 2. he couldnt talk or move his legs but his wings were still working. hes recently got his speach back after a few wks but he still cant move his legs, which means he cant sit on his perch, he seems well apart from this. he still eats n has started to twitter away again, but he uses his beak now to hang on to the top of the cage because he cant stand. ive padded the bottom of his cage with a towel so he doesnt hurt himself if he falls n av also put his food dish on the bottom of the cage. he pulls himself about by his beak n has started to learn to live without his legs. i thot about having him put to sleep, but hes still very with it n loves snuggling in to my chest n would sit there happily all day. Do you think its cruel to keep him alive? i just think hes happy, n you wouldnt put a dog down if it lost the use of it legs, any feedback would be much appreciated! thanks jacqii xx

Answer
Hi, Jacqii,

I recommend you have your budgie seen by an avian veterinarian.  There are many things that can cause paralysis in birds and an avian vet will be able to properly diagnose your bird and recommend treatment options.  I wouldn't recommend putting him to sleep without seeing a bird vet first, as it may not be necessary, depending on the diagnosis.  There's the possibility the vet can help your budgie.
