Sick-budgie/worms

Question
Hi
My male budgie has been sick since sometime. I think its been more than a month. There arent good vets around so I cant take him to a doctor.
Symptoms:
He vomits almost everyday. I notice he usually does this in the evening. Also, he has lost a lot weight. He can fly around though.
Whenever i come near his cage, he gets very restless and starts to follow me around as if he wants something. I usually feed him some bird seed, which he eats as if he hasnt eaten the entire day.
A friend said theres a possibility of worms in his stomach and told me to give him some Ivermectin in water. Followed by ORS for the next few days.
Today I noticed, his poop was brown in color. Like, chocolate brown. It had white in the center. It was also hanging from his butt. It was not exactly liquid. It didnt even form a dot like it normally does. It was kind of in the middle.
Is this okay? Can u tell me what is wrong with my budgie and what i can do for him?
I dont know his exact age since i bought him from a shop and shopkeepers here do not care about the birds. I do know he is around 7 years old since my budgies have been with me since 7 years. Please reply ASAP.
Thank you!

Answer
Hi, Rashi.  I'm not a vet and it's very difficult to diagnose a bird's illness over a website.  But I'll provide some information.

By the time we notice our bird's are sick, they've been sick too long.  Bird's hide illness until they can't hide it any more, which means they are getting worse, not better.  You really need to get your budgie to a bird vet ASAP.

Vomiting can be a sign of affection when it comes to birds.  However, the other symptoms you describe tell me your bird is sick.  Weight loss is a number one sign of illness.  If you can see his keel (breast) bone protruding, your bird is very sick.  It's possible your bird could have worms if your bird is exposed to other animals with worms and/or if your bird has access to the ground (worms live in the ground).  I use Ivermectin to worm my pigeons and it should not be mixed with water...it's mixed with propylene glycol....both in the proper amounts in order to be effective.  Propylene glycol is a carrier for the Ivermectin in an animals' system.  However, you should not be worming your bird unless you know he has worms.  Otherwise, you could be making matters worse.  I do not know what ORS is.

The chocolate colored poo could be caused by the type of food your bird is eating...I don't know for sure without knowing more about what's been going on.  Bird's normally have a brownish-colored poo if they've been eating a normal diet...some foods can change poo color...it just depends on what the food is.  But if your bird has been on the same diet, the change in poo color can indicate some type of intestinal problem.  Having said this, whenever poo sticks to a bird's vent, this indicates illness, usually a gastrointestinal problem.  A gastrointestinal problem can take many forms, so this is why it's important for a bird vet to take a mouth swab to test, as well as a swab of the poo that is sticking to the bird's vent to test in order to determine what the illness is and then prescribe the proper medication.  Just haphazardly medicating is not the right thing to do.  You could make your bird even more sick and if you don't give the proper dosage for the proper length of time, you might as well not do anything.

I've seen this type of illness many times, and I'll tell you that if you do not get your bird on the proper medication for his illness, you will most likely lose this bird very soon.  Even though your bird is eating, his body is not metabolizing the food, thus, his weight loss.  Your bird is actually starving to death even though he's eating like he's never eaten before.  This is why it's very important to get your bird to a bird vet ASAP.

Sorry I can't be more help.
