Question
hi, i have two kakarikis. one is yellow and the other is green they are both red headed. the green one has been laying eggs and so i thought that it must be a girl and the yellow must be a boy wich confused me a bit because the green one looked a lot more boyish. i put a nest where they could lay their eggs and i heard it takes about 20 to 28 days for the eggs to hatch. so i waited and waited for over 30 days im sure. this has happend to me so many times now its getting annoying because i have to keep throwing the eggs away. i have heard that its in the nature of female kakarikis to lay eggs that are empty or infertile but im sure somethings not right, they could both be female but i cant seem to tell who is laying them. i always thought that green Kakarikis were male and yellow ones were female. please give me some advice both are very well hand tamed but i think the green one has pschological problems. i got the kakarikis from a shop and not a a private breeder so they could be infertile birds anyway, i have dad them for more yhan two years now, im so confused and i dont know what to do, please help me.

Answer
Hello Chris and thank you for your post.
It is possible for both of them to be females.  The best way to tell who is laying the eggs, or if they both are is to separate them.
Any female bird can lay infertile eggs and it is not unusual for them to do so.
The only other way to tell for sure what the sex of the bird is to have a DNA test done on the bird.

You may end up throwing more eggs away, as frustrating as it is.  If there is not a male involved, though, none of the eggs will be fertile.

I hope this helps.

Good luck and God Bless.
