Question
Is it bad for a horse that pulls a carriage twice a week to be fed only a rich alfalfa hay on a consistent daily basis

Answer
It depends on the workload.  If it is hard work or a heavy load then it would be worth giving some sweet feed to supplement. If it's fairly easy work then alfalfa should be sufficient.  Look at the condition of your horse.  Does it still have energy after it's been worked? Does it recover quickly after work?  Is it in good condition?  If you've answered yes to all of these then the hay is probably sufficient.  If no, then a supplement is needed.
