Can Horses eat Silage

Question
This is the first time I have ever been able to keep a horse at my home ( I have alway borded in the past). We also have cattle and they eat silage, I have a paint who is let out to pasture and can reach into the cows feeding trough and is eating the silage. I was just wondering if it is safe for him to eat?

Answer
Hi,  Short answer is no.  Like lawn clippings silage can ferment in the stomach/hind gut and cause severe colic.

It would be best to try and fence it off or move the feeder for the cattle to the other side of the paddock so the horse can't reach it.

Cheers
