Questionhello, what is rye grass hay? is it good for racing thoroughbred horses? what all does it contain?
AnswerHello Caine,
Thank you for your question. Rye grass is a type of grass that can make excellent quality hay for horses, including racehorses. Annual rye grass can be quite nutrient dense for a grass, depending on its maturity level at harvest. Like any grass forage, rye grass will bring energy, protein, mineral and vitamins to the horse's diet..but once again, the nutrient density is very dependent on the plant's stage of maturity at harvest time. It is not recommended to use perennial rye grass for horse, as it can contain endophytes which are potentially toxic to horses.
I hope that helps.
Thanks, Corlena
