Question
What enzymes are present in a horses saliva? or is it used purely as a lubricant and neutraliser for the stomach acid?

Answer
Hi Becky,

Saliva's main job is a lubricant for food boluses and a a buffer to stomach acidity.  But it does contain a minimal amount of enzyme (approximately 0.5%), primarily amylase.  Amylase breaks down starch into glucose, and is secreted in the mouth to jump start the sometimes difficult task of breaking down densely starch feeds.

Thanks, Corlena
