Smelly Water

Question
My wife and I only discovered last week the barn we're planning on moving our
horses to has really smelly water--caused, we're told, by sulfur in the well
water. We're told this is nothing dangerous and it's only a matter of our horses
(and us) getting used to it. Is that true? Or should we be concerned?

Answer
Hi Evan,

Yes, it is true you have nothing to worry about as far as the well water being harmful to your horses.  However, horses are very picky at times about the smell of water, so I would keep an eye on them to make sure they are drinking for the first week or so.  You may need to give them electrolytes to keep them drinking if they seem to be picky about the smell.  Actually, I've read, the sulfides in well water can be beneficial to one's skin tone and hair so one would have to assume that would hold true with horses also.
