Question
hello, how much should a show jumping both thoroughbred stallion or gelding and mare weigh approximately to be able to jump over fences and poles? tell me their approx. weight according to their height. tell me the weight separately for both stallion or a gelding and a mare.

Answer
Hi Caine,

Thank you for your question.  I'm afraid I can't answer your question the way you would like it answered.  There is no scale that accurately relates height to weight in any given breed...because there are different factors that influence body weight, primarily conformation.  How your horse is put together determines how much a horse should weigh for its size.  What I could suggest is that a performance horse should be in a body condition score of approximately 4.5-5.0 ( on a scale of 1-9).  Body Condition Scoring is used to gauge a horse's condition...and in part its energy level. A horse with a score of 4.5-5 is carrying about the right amount of weight for its size, enough so that it is assumed not to be deprived of energy but not so much that the extra weight could impede performance.  For a detailed description on how to use the body condition score system, visit:

Not exactly the answer you work looking for, but the closest I can get.

Thanks, Corlena
