Question
hello ma'am, 4 months back, i asked a racehorse trainer ED HESS, what does he feed to his stable wards early in the morning before he takes the horses to work. below is the question and answer posted to him. please read it and tell me whether this feed ratio would be applicable to show jumping horses. please ma'am!!!
"hello sir, you told me that you would feed your stable horses lightly like giving a breakfast early in the morning 1 hour before you start exercising them. then, may i know in how much quantity you feed your horses, tell me about both fodder and forage. what all you feed them early in the morning just for stamina?

Answer: HI -- I ALWAYS WOULD FEED THE HORSE 1 QUART OF OATS, JUST TO GIVE THEM A VERY LIGHT BREAKFAST. NO HAY OR ANY OTHER FEED, JUST 1 QUART OF OATS. THEN AFTER THEY ARE ALL COOLED OUT AND RESTED I WOULD FEED THEM A LIGHT LUNCH. . THEN AT NIGHT I WOULD FEED THEM THEIR MAIN MEAL AND SOME HAY BEFORE I LEFT THE BARN FOR THE NIGHT."

Answer
Hello Rohit,

Thank you for your question.  There are many different opinions out there about feeding horses, and I know you've asked me a very similar question in the past.  I am not a fan of feeding horses high starch grains on an empty stomach, and especially not before exercise as exercise has a distinct impact on the rate of passage of digesta.  I also like a ration to have forage available throughout the day, without long periods of no available feed. Ideally, forage available free choice with small grain feedings timed a few hours before (or after) exercise would be more beneficial to the digestive system of the horse.

Thanks, Corlena
