Question
I bought an 11 year old MFT/Spotted Saddle Horse gelding. I was told he was completely cut. I now suspect he was proud cut...Hard to manage/control. Can I have him safely recut @ this age? Will it mellow him out? Previous owner fed 1 scoop a day & he was very manageable & well behaved. I doubled it & started having problems as soon as the feed set in @ about 6 weeks. Now he's @ 4 scoops a day for winter & hateful/bucks. Would it be better to get him through the winter & cut his 12% feed back to 1 scoop a day? That just doesn't seem like enough for a horse that's 15.1

Answer
Hi Carol,
You can have the vet down to take some blood to check his testosterone levels. It sounds as though, the problem may be more feed related. I would take him off all grain, and just give him free choice hay of a grass type. Unless, he is working several days a week or is thin,  then he does not need grain. If those conditions do exist then give him a pelleted feed. This way you have the protein without the sugar.
